The situation

No hot water right now?

What to do right now while you wait

Turn off the cold water supply valve — it's on the pipes above or beside the water heater. Turn it clockwise until it stops. This cuts off water flowing into the tank.

Gas water heater: turn the gas control valve at the unit to the Pilot position. Electric water heater: flip the breaker for the water heater to Off at your panel.

If water is pooling at the base, lay towels down but leave the pressure relief valve alone. A discharging PRV can release hot water — give it space.

You've secured the unit. Here's what to expect when we arrive.

How fast we can arrive

Same-day dispatch Monday–Friday 8am–4pm. We give you a specific window — not a four-hour range. After-hours calls go through our trusted partner network; we'll tell you if that applies and what it costs before you commit.

What happens when we arrive

We diagnose the problem and show you what we found — element failure, thermostat fault, failing PRV, or something else.

Written estimate before any work starts, priced by the job, not the hour.

If the repair is straightforward, we do it same visit. Trucks are stocked for the most common failures: elements, thermostats, anode rods, and valves.

If a part needs to be ordered, we'll walk you through your options — including temporary workarounds — before we leave.

Why us

Why Portland Homeowners Choose bluefrog

SE Portland, independently owned

Morgan founded and runs bluefrog from SE Portland. The business is woman-owned and LGBTQ-owned — a team that reflects the city we serve. When you call, you reach a local shop whose owner oversees every project, not a national dispatch center routing you to whoever's available.

Flat-rate pricing, in writing

We price by the job, not by the hour. You see a written estimate after diagnosis and before we touch anything — no overtime charges, no surprises. The number on the estimate is the number on the invoice.

Fully licensed, permits handled

Every technician works under Oregon CCB #255748. We pull the permit, schedule the inspection, and close it out — you don't have to coordinate anything. The work meets Oregon code and gives your home a clean paper trail.

Bradford White listed contractor

We're listed on the Bradford White contractor finder, which means equipment from a manufacturer we know well. Your warranty stays intact the way it was written — not voided by an unlisted installer.

Questions, answered

Common Questions About Emergency Water Heater Repair in Portland

How fast can you get here?

Same-day dispatch Monday–Friday 8am–4pm — for a repair, calling by early afternoon usually gets you a same-day slot. After-hours and weekend calls go through our partner network; availability varies, and we'll tell you timing and any added cost before you commit.

Should I shut off the water heater myself while I wait?

Yes — it's safe and helps. For the water supply: find the cold water inlet valve above or beside the unit and turn it clockwise to close. For gas units: turn the gas control dial to Pilot. For electric units: flip the water heater breaker at your panel. If you're not sure which breaker it is, leave it and let us handle it when we arrive.

Is this a real emergency or can it wait until tomorrow?

Active water on the floor, a gas smell, or a discharging pressure relief valve: call now. Cold water only, no leak, no smell: you can schedule a morning appointment — your unit isn't going to worsen overnight. If you're unsure, call us and describe what you're seeing. We'll give you a straight answer.

What does emergency water heater repair cost in Portland?

The same as a scheduled repair — we don't charge a premium for same-day calls during business hours. You'll get a written upfront estimate after diagnosis, before any work starts. After-hours calls through our partner network may include a dispatch fee; we'll tell you that before anyone rolls a truck.
